FOOTAGE has emerged showing the extent of the damage to Walthamstow's historic former EMD cinema following its occupation by squatters.

The listed building, in Hoe Street, was broken into last week.

Some occupants also attempted to hold a rave there on Saturday (February 19) until it was thwarted by a mixture of police, council staff and residents.

It has been alleged that some of the squatters sprayed graffiti and broke windows during their stay, however long-term water damage and flooding was also discovered when local campaigners gained entry to the building.

The EMD closed as a cinema 2003 after it was bought by religious group the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG).

The organisation has defended its maintenance of the building, saying it has spent more than £100,000 on works to protect it.

The Guardian is awaiting a response from the UCKG over claims that water damage was not caused by the squatters.

Waltham Forest Council is currently considering an application by the group to convert the building into a church.

No date for a planning hearing has yet been set.

Meanwhile a petition calling for Waltham Forest Council to reject the UCKG's planning application has topped 1,760 signatures.

It closes next Wednesday (March 2).
