WALTHAM FOREST: Floating cinema designs unveiled

THE FINAL design for a floating cinema which could be seen sailing down the River Lee this summer has been unveiled.

The Olympic Delivery Authority has commissioned designs by arts organisation, UP Projects to convert an existing barge into a floating cinema.

The boat is expected to sail through Waltham Forest and the four other Olympic host boroughs between July and September.

The 12-seater cinema will screen films, indoors and host larger outdoor films at night, when pictures and artworks will also be projected onto the bank-side, while the audience watch from the tow-path.

The three-month Portavilion 2011 project has been funded by the Arts Council and will open to coincide with this year's Create arts festival taking place across all five boroughs.

A spokes woman for UP said if the project is successful they will look to run it again next year.

She added: ”We are very interested in public art and making people more aware of green spaces and water ways.”

This project is also part of the ODLA's 'inside out' series of art-led community engagement projects to integrate art into the Olympic Park.

Portavilion 2011 will focus on waterways that connect the boroughs of Tower Hamlets, Newham, Waltham Forest, Hackney and Greenwich with the new Olympic Park.

It is so ironic that they have utilized all these monies for the olympics and yet have let the Iconic Emd float downwards towards the drain with no questions asked?

The even greater irony, Sandeep, is that the EMD is now awash with water due, ir appears, to the bilge pump not having been adequately maintained by the UCKG. One cinema floats while the other sinks!

The perfect double bill would be Hitchcock's Lifeboat followed by Titanic.

Pathetic - why dont they put some of this effort and money into giving the borough a permanent Cinema that more than 12 people can watch a film at.

Is it meant to be symbolic, given that our hopes for a cinema have been floating down the Lea for years now, and we feel that we've been sold down the river on so many matters?
