The man is believed to have had a heart attack at the wheel of his blue Renault Clio before crashing into the building in the Crooked Mile, Waltham Abbey, at about 8.15am.

The Waltham Abbey resident was given emergency resuscitation before being taken to Lister Hospital in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, where his condition is described as critical.

The road was closed until about 11.15am.

The police want to speak to the female driver of a silver Mercedes who stopped at the scene, but did not leave her details.

She and any other witnesses should call the Chigwell roads policing unit on 0300 3334444.
