A GROUP that promotes green living has been awarded a £3,000 grant.

The Wanstead Transition Initiative has been awarded £3,170 from the Redbridge Strategic Partnership to raise awareness of sustainable living.

The group, which was only founded six months ago, aims to turn Wanstead in to a 'transition town', one of a network of communities that have limited their dependence on fossil fuels and increased their use of renewable energy sources.

The Wanstead Transition Initiative has held a number of events in the past year to encourage environmental awareness, including talks on solar energy and how to conserve energy and screenings of environmental films and documentaries.

The initiative meets on the first Thursday of every month at the Nightingale pub in Nightingale Lane, Wanstead, to discuss environmental issues.

On May 31 the group will screen The Economics of Happiness at Christchurch Hall, Wanstead Place.

“The money will be used to publicise our initiative as widely as possible within Wanstead. It will enable us to hold regular public meetings, with films and advertise our activities more widely," said Paul Donovan of the Wanstead Transition Initiative.
