A MAN is being treated for head and spinal injuries after being hit by a car as he slept in a field.

The 27-year-old from Ongar was believed to have been attending a concert at Writtle College near Chelmsford before he was crushed by the car in a field off nearby Lordship Road at 8am on Saturday (May 21).

He suffered a fractured spine and a serious cut to his head after the car rolled down a hill and hit him.

He was taken to Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford, where he is still being treated today (Monday).

He was originally thought to have been in a tent, but police have since said he was sleeping in the open air.

A 20-year-old man from Leigh and a 21-year-old man from Chelmsford have been arrested and bailed until July 21.

But officers have said their inquiries so far point to an accident.

A spokeswoman for the college said the man was not a student there.

She added: "The College can confirm that an incident took place on land near the main college campus during the morning of Saturday 21 May.

"Details of how the incident occurred are being investigated by the police and we are awaiting the outcome of their enquiries.

"Our main concern at this time is with the injured person who we understand is being treated in hospital."
