REDBRIDGE Council is calling on landlords to help make sure tenants can stay in their homes as nationwide changes to housing benefit are introduced.

Landlords are being asked to check whether the changes affect their tenants and to see if it’s possible to reduce their rents if necessary.

If they agree to reduce rents, the Council will pay housing benefit directly to landlords, making payments quicker and easier.

Housing Benefit Changes came into force from 1 April 2011 for anyone making a new benefit claim and anyone with a change in circumstances.

The changes mean residents may receive less cash than before.

Residents already receiving housing benefit will see a change nine months after their annual review date which means most people will be affected from January 2012.

All tenants affected by the changes will receive a letter outlining their personal circumstances.

Landlords wanting more information on the changes should visit www.redbridge.gov.uk or call 020 8708 5690.
