POLICE are investigating two shootings - including an incident where a woman passer-by was nearly hit by a stray bullet.

The first case happened near Mister Tee's barbers in the High Road, Leytonstone, at 10.45pm.

Residents claim that shots were fired in close proximity to a female member of the public who was walking past at the time.

The second shooting was in Corn Way at 10.15pm. No-one was hurt in either incident.

The Met's Trident unit, which deals with violent crime in the black community, is leading the investigation.

It is thought the incidents may be gang-related. A Met spokesman moved to reassure the public.

He said: "Compared to the same period last year there has been a 25 per cent reduction on reported gun crime in the borough [since April 2011]."

"Operation Connect is a central task unit specifically designed to deal with gang violence.

"They are a proactive unit but they are assisting local policing teams to identify opportunities for intervention, both with youngsters who want to leave gangs and those on the periphery at risk of getting involved in them.

"They will be helping them to access specialist existing Met support and referring them to partner schemes run by external agencies."
