A RESIDENTS' association has raised nearly £3,000 to fund a three-day outdoor roller skating extravaganza after council "red tape" nearly scuppered the event.

The Friends of Langthorne Park group in Leytonstone have been planning for two years to hold the community gathering but were shocked when the authority demanded £1,000 in rent per day because organisers wanted to charge a small fee for entry.

But determined residents instead decided to hit the streets and within weeks raised enough cash to cover their costs, allowing them to hold it for free and not pay the council charge.

Vice-secretary Amanda Henry said: "It was crazy that the council wanted to make us pay such a large amount. We're a not-for-profit community group and the entrance fee was to cover all the costs.

"We've been wanting to hold an event like this for everyone, young and old, for a long time and if it wasn't for the community spirit around here it wouldn't have happened.

"We made a few phone calls and spoke with some shopkeepers and everyone really wanted to help. We were amazed how much we were able to raise in such a short space of time."

The event, which takes place in the football and basketball court section of the park between Friday August 19 and Sunday August 21, will allow residents to don hired roller skates and safety gear and get training from instructors.

"It will be a bit like a massive roller disco," said Ms Henry.

"Youth services have been depleted in the borough so events like this are so important now.

"We're all very excited about it. It's a positive, family-friendly and healthy thing to do and we hope if there's enough interest we can set up a club.

"But his also shows the nicer side of Leytonstone and the people who live and work here. We are very lucky, if it wasn't for the work of everyone this would not have happened.

"This red tape is a huge obstacle and not-for-profit groups should not be charged like this."

Ms Henry added she would like to thank sponsors including Express Food and Wine, Monarch Sports, JS Entertainment, Rangers Removals, Tesco, housing associations CBHA and L&Q and residents.

The event runs between 11am and 7pm during all three days.

All those from reception age upwards can take part, and it is also suitable for wheelchair users.
