RESIDENTS across Waltham Forest will start receiving new green recycling wheelie bins in the next few weeks.

They will replace the current black boxes which the council says are now too small to cope.

It comes after the authority signed a £90million deal with Kier Street Services this summer to overhaul the borough's waste disposal.

Cllr Clyde Loakes, cabinet member for the environment, said the changes had been introduced after the council put in place measures to increase the types of materials which could be recycled, such as plastic food and drink packaging.

He said: “Now we’re introducing bins for recycling so that residents can recycle more and help us all strive to reach the target of recycling 45 per cent of household waste by 2015.

“I hope the green recycling bin will encourage everyone living in the borough to recycle more."

Households will be allowed to keep their black recycling boxes if they want them for their personal use.

“If residents do not want to keep their black box, they just need to leave them out the week after their new green recycling bin is delivered and we will take them away” said Cllr Loakes.

The council aims to deliver the new bins to every household by Christmas.

It claims the new contract will save £2million a year and also cut down on landfill costs.
