THIS year’s Redbridge Carnival Queen was chosen in what the mayor called the festival’s closest ever competition.

Julia Gold was named the carnival’s 2011 Queen in a ceremony at Toni and Guy hairdresser’s, in High Road, Ilford, on September 7.

Competitors had to wait for nearly an hour as judges struggled to pick a winner.

The runners up include Natashai Ragavan, weho is on Redbridge Youth Council and is an Olympic Ambassador.

The girls were judged by Kiran Patti - chair and Toni and Guy manager, Anthony Mondon, Mayor of Redbridge Councillor Chris Cummins and former carnival queen Kaijul Pahl.

They had to demonstrate their community work, appearance, public speaking ability and cat walk walking.

Chairman of the carnival, Wilson Chowdhry, said: “It was a fantastic evening. Julia deservedly won but the competition was very close and it promises for an excellent carnival this year. I want to thank Toni and Guy for hosting the event.”

The carnival takes place this weekend in Valentines Park, Ilford.
