PLANS for 10 gipsy caravan pitches on farmland have been thrown out by the Government.
The application for the pitches at The Meadows in Nazeing was referred to the Department for Communities and Local Government because it would be a significant development on Green Belt land.
The department, headed by MP Eric Pickles, said the pitches would not fit in with the local development plan for the area and would have too great an impact on the Green Belt to be allowed.
In a statement, it said the development would “harm the character and appearance of the surrounding countryside and there are no very special circumstances sufficient to outweigh that harm.”
A scheme for a 22-pitch travellers’ site in The Meadows was rejected by the Government in 2008, after it was decided that it would have an adverse impact on the Green Belt, amenities and roads.
