A 40-year-old man is in a critical condition after he was attacked at the weekend.

He suffered serious head injuries in the incident, which happened by the estate in Marlowe Road, Walthamstow, at around 6.30am on Saturday (November 5).

Neighbours say there was a row in the street moments before.

Richard Durand, 45, of Overton Road in Leyton, has been charged with grievous bodily harm in connection with the attack.

He is due to appear at Waltham Forest Magistrates Court today (Monday, November 7).

A 46-year-old woman from Walthamstow was also arrested but has been released on bail until a date in December pending further enquiries.

A Met spokesman moved to reassure residents that no-one had been killed, despite rumours sweeping the estate.

The victim is currently in hospital in a critical but stable condition.

It is believed that no weapons were used in the attack.

The road and surrounding area was sealed off by police for much of the weekend while officers investigated.
