A DATE has been set for the closure of two libraries.
South Chingford Library in Hall Lane and Harrow Green Library in Cathall Road, Leytonstone, will close on Friday December 2, it has been announced today.
The decision concerning the future of the libraries was made by cabinet on October 11.
The local authority says the changes will allow for a modern, sustainable library service that meets residents’ needs while saving Waltham Forest taxpayers £1m a year.
This is despite a petition, signed by 1,000 and 6,000 people, against the closure of the south Chingford and Leytonstone facilities, respectively.
Conservative councillors in Chingford are currently involved in talks with the local authority over using the now defunct Waltham Forest Direct shop in chingford Mount Road as a community-run library.
And campaigners fighting against the closure of the Leytonstone library are drawing up plans for a similar project.
