SELLING a weird and wonderful array of spells and amulets, cloaks and crystal wands, White Witch is far from your usual high street retailer.

Yet the dimly lit shop in a 16th century building in Church Street, Waltham Abbey, from which the smell of incense and the sound of strange music drifts, has just been crowned as the town’s first ever Independent Retailer of the Year by the Town Centre Partnership after being nominated by customers.

The shop was established by authentic white witch Debbie Harding 12 years ago and now attracts visitors from as far afield as the United States, drawn to the shops unique atmosphere and extraordinary array of esoteric goods.

Miss Harding, who lives in Harlow, said: “We have customers who come from all over the place. Some come from as far afield as the Isle of Wight and Scotland to stock up on candles and books and things.”

She said that it was the area’s history that first attracted her to set-up shop in Waltham Abbey.

“Essex has a good pagan heritage and was one of the last counties to hold out against the persecution of the witches by Matthew Hopkins [the 'Witchfinder General' who was responsible for the persecution of withes in 17th century England].

“Waltham Abbey is a beautiful little town and has a lovely feel.”

Miss Harding said the shop's atmosphere is at the heart of its success.

“It is a little haven of tranquillity and we always take time to talk to and learn about people.

“I think that on the high street these days that is increasingly rare. One person described as being like a little Glastonbury.”

For the curious but apprehensive Miss Harding had words of welcome: “Of course, you do not have to be a witch to come in here. We think we have something for everyone and have lots of pretty things and a genuinely welcoming atmosphere.”
