CHINGFORD MP Iain Duncan Smith has called for the electorate to be consulted on any major changes to the European Union treaty.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the French President Nicolas Sarkozy are expected to outline plans to tackle the eurozone debt crisis by integrating the tax systems of countries using the single currency.

The Work and Pensions Secretary said the Government must hold a referendum if Britain’s relationship with the EU is redefined.

“The British public will have a say, will have a right to have a say,” he told Sky News.

But it is understood Downing Street has made it clear that the Prime Minister does not believe the Franco-German plan justifies a referendum.
