THERE is a risk that spending on the Olympic Games could go over its £9.3 billion budget, a watchdog has warned.

A report released today by the National Audit Office says the Olympic Delivery Authority is on course to complete the works needed for the event next year.

But in a statement, head of the watchdog Amyas Morse said: "The Government is confident that there is money available to meet known risks, but, in my view, the likelihood that the Games can still be funded within the existing £9.3 billion public sector funding package is so finely balanced that there is a real risk more money will be needed.

"Moreover, important issues relating to the cost and staffing of venue security and restrictions on transport in London are still unresolved."

It comes after the government said an extra £271m was needed to fund extra security at the Games.
