BUSINESS is booming in South Woodford thanks to campaign to encourage residents to shop local.

But shopkeepers fear that keeping customers coming back will be a tough challenge in the new year.

Suzanne Bennett of Sid and Evies toy shop on George Lane created the Shop Local campaign last month when footfall reached a worrying low.

She said that the newly opened Westfield shopping centre in Stratford was drawing away customers and leaving the high street bare.

Together with other local retailers Mrs Bennett set up numerous campaigns to encourage shoppers back.

Special offers, discounts, games and gifts have all been on offer over the past month - and they have been a resounding success, she told the Guardian.

“We have lots of people coming into the shop saying they support the campaign, they are really proud to tell us that they shop locally.

“The reaction to the campaign is great. Just to have five or six more people a day really makes a difference to small businesses.”

The focus is now to keep the campaign going strong into January and February to make sure the annual low season does not damage trade.

“It’s a challenging time and we need to keep people aware of what we have to offer,” Mrs Bennett said.

“We have lots of new projects in mind. We want people coming back.”

This Saturday as part of the Shop Local campaign children under 12 are invited to take part in a treasure hunt on George Lane.

Youngsters can pick up a form at Sid and Evies before setting off to find the 14 listed shops, with parents in tow.

They have to solve a riddle to find out where to go next and will receive stamps on their treasure map, and a free gift.
