CHRISTMAS came early for dozens of poorly youngsters at Whipps Cross Hospital when they were given a selection of presents.

The gifts were handed out by Frank Charles, of the Sybourn Children's Centre in Leyton, as part of his annual Give a Gift appeal.

Mr Charles has spent the last eight years collecting gifts for children at the Leytonstone hospital in memory of his son Ashley who died there as a baby in 1989.

He said the event had been a great success and thanked pearly queen Doreen Golding for coming along on behalf of the Variety Club of Great Britain, which donated the gifts along with supermarket Sainsbury's.

Mr Charles said: "We had nearly 50 parcels this year and it was great to see how happy the children were.

"I'm suffering from cancer and this time last year I was in Whipps, so it was very humbling to go back like this.

"I want to thank the sponsors for their generous donations and the hospital for all the good work they do."
