GCSE attainment in Waltham Forest falls below London average

SECONDARY school pupils are falling below the London average for achieving basic qualifications.

League tables published today show that the number of Waltham Forest teenagers achieving five A*-C grades at GCSE (or "good" GCSEs) is in line with the national average of 59 per cent, but below the London average of 65 per cent.

But the Government statistics showed a variety of results for the borough’s schools, ranging from 100 per cent down to just 39 per cent.

All Key Stage 4 students at Forest School, in College Place, Snaresbrook, achieved five good GCSEs between A* to C grades.

But George Mitchell Secondary School in Burchell Road, Leyton, saw just 39 per cent of its students attain this benchmark. Lammas School and Sports College in Seymour Road, Leyton, faired only slightly better with 41 per cent.

Normanhurst School in Station Road, Chingford, was the second highest of Waltham Forest’s 19 schools in the table with 79 per cent, followed by Highams Park School in Hansworth Avenue which achieved 75 per cent.

The Holy Family Technology College in Shernhall Street, Walthamstow, was placed third with 71 per cent.

At two schools not one student achieved the English Baccalaureate, introduced in 2010 to measure the proportion of pupils achieving five A* to C grade passes in academic subjects.

One was Lammas Sports Colege and the other was Lantern of Knowledge Secondary School, in Lindley Road, Leyton, which saw 67 per cent of its pupils achieve five good GCSEs.

The highest percentage of pupils who were awarded the English Baccalaureate were at Forest School in Snaresbrook and Normanhurst School, both tied at 43 per cent.

While that was better than the national average of one in six pupils, the borough average of 15 per cent fell just below that figure.
