A fire is believed to have started in a ten-storey hostel when a cigarette was left unattended.

Sixty residents were evacuated from the building in Lea Bridge Road, Leyton, when the fire started at around 5.30pm yesterday (January 31).

Flames engulfed a fourth floor flat, which was completely destroyed.

No-one was injured.

Why is smoking tolerated in this building? A strict rule should have been enforced - found smoking or having naked flames will result in immediate eviction.
