WALTHAMSTOW: Bingo chain eyes up E17

A BINGO chain has said it is keen to open a new venue in Walthamstow, in a move it says will create 50 jobs.

Mecca Bingo says it has picked the E17 postcode area after "extensive research" suggested the town would be a viable market.

The firm previously had a branch in Walthamstow which closed in 2001.

Managing Director Mark Jones said the "time was right" to return to the area but added that his company had yet to find a suitable site for the proposed venue.

He said: “We are actively seeking a new location in Walthamstow as we are keen to open one of our new-look leisure venues in the area.

"Not only will it bring much-needed employment opportunities to the area but it will also offer locals a new female-friendly sociable gaming concept which is an attractive alternative to standard leisure activities such as the cinema or going to the pub."

A spokeswoman said the company was looking for somewhere with at least 30,000 square feet of space close to an A road and residential areas, along with a minimum of 150 parking spaces.

The chain already owns 98 clubs in the UK.

Any new venue would need a licence from the government's Gambling Commission before opening.

Legal loan sharks, betting shops, pawn brokers and now bingo - just what a poor borough (and getting poorer) needs!

What about the place on Lea Bridge Road? Is there that much call for bingo these days, I've not seen people queueing to get in there ever.
Trying to think of somewhere that could hold 150 cars that the council hasn't approved building mini ghetto's on.

Call me a fool, but I do love a bit of bingo. Those who don't like gambling, I assume aren't fighting for Save our Stow.
