SWIMMERS from Waltham Forest won a competition between Olympic Games host boroughs in the first community event at the 2012 Aquatics Centre.

Teams including the Waltham Forest Gators and Leyton Swimming Club beat off rivals from five other local authorities to scoop the top prize on Sunday (March 18).

A total of 34 swimmers competed across 53 races, claiming 21 gold, 17 silver and six bronze medals between them.

Teams and spectators were also given to a sneak-peak of Team GB’s synchronised swimming routine.

Cllr Geraldine Reardon, Waltham Forest’s Cabinet Member for Leisure, said: "The atmosphere was absolutely incredible and Waltham Forest’s swimmers put in a brilliant performance."

David Sparks, Chief Executive of British Swimming, said: “This event gave the local community their first taste of their new swimming facility and we are certain that this pool will stimulate more people to swim more often and inspire a young person to aspire to become an Olympic Champion in the future.”
