BORIS Johnson has approved a request to provide £1.9million of funding towards the regeneration of Barkingside Town Centre.
The proposal is one of three which Redbridge Council submitted to City Hall for consideration by the Mayor of London’s Outer London Fund (OLF).
The scheme, along with bids to regenerate Ilford Town Centre and provide flood protection for the River Roding, was overlooked by the OLF in January.
But on March 9, the Mayor signed a letter approving the Barkingside plan, which would see a new town square built in the area.
The Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader of Redbridge Council, Ian Bond, said: “The decision is very welcome, but I do have some questions about the timing of it.”
Yesterday Boris Johnson spoke on the importance of regenerating Outer London, an area which is considered as a key battleground in the forthcoming Mayoral elections.
The Council will contribute £200,000 in match funding towards the Barkingside plan, but no date has been set for any work.
