A PEDESTRIAN crossing is finally working again after being out of action for six weeks, but the cause of the delay remains a mystery.

Lights at the busy crossing in Chingford Mount Road in Chingford, near the junction with Hampton Road, were damaged by a car in early February.

But repairs were not completed until last Thursday (March 22) with Transport for London (TfL) and Waltham Forest Council blaming each other for the delay.

While TfL is responsible for all traffic lights, the council was required to put up barriers at the site so the crossing could be brought back into operation.

A council spokesman said the authority notified TfL that it had done so on March 13.

But TfL said the lights were switched on as soon as it was informed the council had fulfilled its obligations.

Maureen Goodwin, 70, of nearby Kingsley Gardens, accused the authorities of passing the buck over the delay.

"I'm glad they're back on again. I went to press the button today specially," she said.
