CALLS for the council to explain its crackdown on motorists who park with two wheels on the pavements of some of the borough’s narrower streets are growing louder.

The latest street to be hit by Redbridge’s spy car is Hillington Gardens in Woodford Green.

Retired plumber, Ken Humphrys, 68, called the Guardian after his appeal of a £55 ticket issued for parking his van with two wheels on the grass verge of his road was turned down.

He said: “A few other neighbours have also been given tickets for the same thing and I don’t know why.

“I had two wheels on the grass verge which I never normally do, but there was a car opposite and the road is so narrow that if I’d parked on the road, cars wouldn’t have been able to get past.”

Mr Humphrys has shown the Guardian a copy of letter sent in 2008 in which the then head of transportation, Geoff Claxton, addresses complaints from a neighbour who received a ticket for parking with two wheels on the footway.

In the letter Mr Claxton writes: “In view of the particular issues in this road, and pending a Borough-wide review, Hillington Gardens has now been taken off the list of roads to enforce.”

Mr Humphrys said: “Nobody I know received any letter in the last four years telling them the rules had changed, and yet this new car suddenly appears and we start getting tickets.

“To my mind that is not fair.”

The Council has suspended enforcement in another street, Wansford Road, pending a review of the rules, but has refused to do the same on other roads including Croft Lodge Close and Durham Avenue which are facing the same issue.

Last week the Guardian asked the Council to explain why enforcement is being suspended on some roads and not others, but they have failed to respond to our request.

The council has also been sent a request to explain the situation on Hillington Gardens.
