LORRIES delivering to a supermarket are causing havoc, according to people living nearby.

The Sainsbury’s local store in the Broadway, Woodford Green has been open since December last year.

Mark Catchlove, 53, who lives on Kings Avenue says traffic is regularly held up by lorries blocking the road.

He phoned Sainsbury’s to complain and says the supermarket giants agreed to send a logistics expert to the site to assess the situation.

He added: “They agreed the lorries were causing problems, but as far as I know they have not done anything.

“The issue is that they are blocking the Broadway and once one of these vehicles parks, cars then get stuck behind it.

“They need to use smaller vans.”

Fellow Kings Avenue resident Lillian Strickett, 87, says that the delivery lorries are causing tailbacks during the busy school run period.

She said: “I often see cars backed up past my house and that’s definitely got worse since the lorries began delivering.

“Life is also very difficult walking along the pavement outside Sainsbury’s when they are unloading because they block the pavement with empty trolleys.”

The Guardian has seen an email sent to Mr Catchlove on February 20 in which a Sainsbury's spokeswoman said: “We are still looking into the points you have raised regarding deliveries to The Broadway Local store.

“We need to look into this further and will respond to you more fully soon.”

But Mr Catchlove says he has heard nothing more.

And Broadway Gardens resident StJohn Groom, 37, backed his claims that lorries are still causing traffic problems during morning deliveries.

He said: “The other day one of the lorries pulled up by an island in the middle of the road.

“He was so close that nobody could get past him and that caused a 30 or 40 car tailback past my house.

“These are 20ft lorries we are talking about. They are just too big for this area.”

A Sainsbury’s spokeswoman said: “We try hard to be a good neighbour and we work closely with our depots and suppliers to try to minimise the inconvenience our deliveries may cause to local residents and businesses.

"We use the smallest delivery vans available to us and have instructed our suppliers to stagger their delivery times to try to ensure multiple vehicles aren’t delivering to the store at the same time.

"We will continue to deliver to the store after 10am to avoid the peak commuter traffic at the tube station, thereby keeping congestion to a minimum.”
