POLICE are treating a fire which engulfed most of a disused warehouse as suspicious.

Firefighters were at the site of the former Focus DIY store in Hickman Avenue, Highams Park, until April 5 after the blaze began on April 4.

Video of the scene filmed yesterday (Wednesday April 4) by David Matthews.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

Fifty firefighters attended the blaze yesterday at just after 3pm.

Thick black smoke could be seen from across London.

The fire brigade said the building was empty and that the dark smoke could be caused by the burning of certain building materials.

No-one was injured or evacuated because of the fire.

Station manager Les Bowen, who was at the scene, said: “This has been a challenging incident for firefighters because of both the size of the building and the size of the fire but our crews have worked extremely hard to get it quickly under control.

“There is a lot of smoke from the fire and we’d advise local residents to keep their doors and windows closed.”
