A RUGBY club who want to pitch a 250 tent campsite on their grounds during the Olympics are in a race against time to resubmit their planning application.

Eton Manner Rugby Club in Nutter Lane, Wanstead, saw their original application rejected by Redbridge Council because it was invalid.

It has now emerged that key information on access plans was missing from the application and that the club forgot to include a £350 registration fee.

The club’s spokesman, Gary Davies, told the Guardian: “It’s true that the Council did come back with a couple of questions around payment and access statements which we are dealing with.

“We are meeting to decide on whether we will resubmit very soon, and I’m sure that we will put in a revised version.”

Some people living in the surrounding streets have voiced concern over the campsite, and a plan by Wanstead Cricket Club which has subsequently fallen through attracted dozens of objections.

But the rugby club’s plan was backed by several local traders who say an influx of tourits to Wanstead would provide them with a timely boost.

And the club have also received the support of an influential residents association.

Helen Zammett of the County Residents Association (CRA) which represents several streets in the area said she had met with representatives of Eton Manor last year.

She added: “The rugby club performs an important function in the community.

“They put on a lot of family events and do good work with local children.

“Obviously a campsite would have some impact on the area, but it would only be there for a matter of weeks.

“If they were just trying to make a fast buck, I would be against it, but I genuinely think any money earned will benefit the community.”

Mr Davies added: “One of the issues with other campsites has been that they were almost seeking to create mini cities with live entertainment and late bars.

“We are literally seeking to pitch some tents. We might give people a bacon roll in the morning, but that’s it.”

The Guardian is awaiting a comment from Redbridge Council on the application.
