BUSES are to be diverted away from a busy road due to concerns about the weak structure of a bridge.

The W11 and W15 services will both have their routes altered from Tuesday May 15 due to worries about the impact of large vehicles on the bridge in Palmerston Road, Walthamstow.

The structure, which is close to the junction with Mission Grove and is well-used by people travelling to Walthamstow Market, goes over the Gospel Oak to Barking railway line between Queens Road and Blackhorse Road stations.

Transport for London (TfL) say the bridge is the responsibility of Network Rail. The Guardian is awaiting further details from the company.

The council is also planning to introduce restrictions banning larger vehicles from using the bridge.

Bus diversions

Route W11 towards Chingford Hall Estate: From Walthamstow Bus Station buses will turn left into Selborne Road, left own Hoe Street, left into Forest Road and then right along South Countess Road.

Route W11 towards Walthamstow Central: From South Countess Road buses will turn left at Forest Road, right into Hoe Street and then right along Selborne Road to Walthamstow Bus Station.

Special dispensation has been given to buses to make the right turn into Hoe Street. The manoeuvre is usually banned during morning peak hours.

Route W15 towards Cogan Avenue Estate: From Palmerston Road at the junction of Mission Grove buses will turn left at Mission Grove, then right down Blackhorse Road, right into Forest Road and then ahead as normal.

Route W15 towards Hackney Central: From Forest Road at the junction of Palmerston Road buses will go down and left at Blackhorse Road, left into Mission Grove and then right along Palmerston Road.

TfL say the diversions will probably be in place until the end of May and are warning customers to expect delays.
