SIX suspected gang members have been arrested by police in the wake of fears over shootings in Chingford.

Officers seized a loaded gun, ammunition and cocaine in the dawn raids, which took place on Friday (May 4).

All those taken into custody are aged between 16 and 22.

Suspected offences range from affray, assault, possession of Class A drugs and firearms offences.

Seven addresses were raided although police have not provided exact addresses. But they did say the gun was found at a property in Chingford.

The raids come following concern over two linked shootings in the Chingford Hall area on Wednesday April 25.

Police borough commander Steve Wisbey described the incidents as a "blip" and said he did not believe that there was any resurgence of gun crime in the area.

A Met spokeswoman said: "Those targeted in [the] coordinated operation are believed to be priority gang nominals who are suspected of involvement in a series of recent crimes on the borough."

A total of 70 police officers took part in the joint operation between the Waltham Forest Crime Squad working and the Met's Trident Gang Crime Command.

Detective Superintendent Ellie O'Connor said: "We will continue to work with partners and the community to make Waltham Forest safer for all.

"The information we receive from the community will be assessed and acted upon as quickly as possible.

"Residents have the right to live peacefully and we will bring offenders to justice." Those with information about gang crime or those involved are urged to call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
