NEIGHBOURS living near the scene of a fatal stabbing say they are “shocked” about what happened.

Marvin Hogan, 28, died after being attacked on the Thornhill Gardens estate in Leyton at around 9.40pm on Bank Holiday Monday (June 4).

Police say Mr Hogan, who lived in the area, was in his silver Vauxhall Astra in nearby Windsor Road when he was confronted by a group of men.

It is rumoured that Mr Hogan was then chased to Thornhill Gardens where he was stabbed underneath the archway entrance to the estate.

He was taken to Royal London Hospital but died in the early hours of Tuesday morning (June 5).

Detectives say they are keeping an open mind over the motive but do not believe it was gang-related.

Neighbours on the estate said the area was known for low-level crime and anti-social behaviour, but said there had not been any similar serious assaults in recent memory.

Richard Tarry, 54, said: “I was sitting watching the Jubilee concert with my wife, it must've been about 9.45pm, when we heard shouting.

“She turned the TV volume down and I could hear someone screaming 'help' and 'get the police'.

“We didn't see what happened but it was pretty scary seeing all the police and forensic teams out there.”

Fellow resident Hortense Blenman, 60, said: “I'm very shocked. It's terribly sad.

“We do have youths hanging around here and there is a problem with thefts from cars, but I can't remember anything this bad happening.”

Helen Greenberg, 55, said: “It's very sad. I am surprised by it but there are problems on this estate.

“My son, who's 20-years-old, moved out of this area recently and I'm so glad he did. I would never walk down this road at night as I don't feel safe.”

In a statement, Mr Hogan's mother Jean said: "If anyone knows what happened to my son please come forward and tell the police."

The Met has opened an incident room under Acting Detective Chief Inspector Rob Pack of the Homicide and Serious Crime Command (HSCC).

He said: "We are asking anyone in the area who may have seen or heard anything of the incident to come forward.

"If you recall anything suspicious - no matter how trivial it might appear - we need to hear from you.

"It could help bring those responsible for Mr. Hogan's murder to justice."

A post mortem was held yesterday (Tuesday) at East Ham mortuary but the results are yet to be released.

There are no reports of any arrests.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Met's incident room on 020 8345 3865.

To remain anonymous call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
