THREE men were arrested during a police crackdown on uninsured drivers in Walthamstow.

Officers stopped 27 vehicles and seized four of them during the operation in Selborne Road on Wednesday (June 13).

A further two stolen cars were also recovered.

Police from the High Street and Markhouse Safer Neighbourhoods Teams used numberplate recognition cameras to check 1,729 vehicles.

A 19-year-old was issued with a fine for possession of cannabis while two were charged on suspicion of driving without insurance.

They were Farrukh Sair Mirza, 28, of Bemsted Road in Walthamstow, and Michak Kamil Forys, 20, of no fixed abode.

The men, who were in separate cars, have been bailed to appear at Thames Magistrates Court on Wednesday June 27.

Mr Forys was also charged with driving a motor vehicle otherwise than in accordance with a licence.

One of the vehicles seized, a van, was found to be full of scrap metal. Officers said they would be investigating further.

Sergeant Jay Champion said: "Waltham Forest police will continue to seize the vehicles of those who break the law.

"Ultimately we want to make the roads in Waltham Forest safer for everyone".

The penalty for driving without insurance is six penalty points and a £200 fine, and can lead to a driving ban.
