PARENTS and children cycled side by side around the borough yesterday (Sunday) in the Tour de Waltham Forest.
Families took to their bikes to enjoy the sunshine in the event promoting a healthier mode of transport.
Although the three routes of five miles, 17 miles and 26 miles pale in comparison to the event's namesake, the 2,123-mile Tour de France, people were left tired but happy after crossing the finish line in Walthamstow town square.
Nicola Tree, 43, of Somers Road in Walthamstow, travelled the 17-mile silver route with her husband and two children.
She said: "It was a really good day with lots of families and it's a great idea. I'd definitely do it again. I was exhausted afterwards, but the kids were ready to go on another one. It's important to promote cycling because it's an enjoyable way to stay healthy."
Mayor of Waltham Forest, keen cyclist Richard Sweden, rode more than 22 miles of the 26-mile gold route, but had to turn back to attend a street party.
He said: "This was the third time I've done the tour but I'd never attempted the gold route before. It was pretty heavy going and I was a bit out of shape but it was fun."
