AN OLD tradition was given a new spin after boys at a village school demanded equality.

Moreton Church of England School in Moreton has been crowning a Rose Queen since the 1960s.

The lucky girl gets to open the school fete and judge the fancy dress competition, but this year the boys at the school insisted there should also be a Rose King.

Head teacher Linda Wiskin, said: “The Rose Queen is selected to represent all that’s good in children.

“But the boys decided that in the name of equality they wanted a king.”

Moreton’s first king, 11-year-old Callum Hibberd, was selected for being respectful to people and especially kind and helpful to his younger schoolmates.

Rose Queen, 11-year-old Kodie Lamey, was also picked for her kindness, with teachers noting that she was always especially nice to anyone who was upset.

The Royal Couple’s coronation took place at the 13th century village church St Mary’s.

King Callum chose not to wear a crown for the day.

Mrs Wiskin said: “He decided that a staff of office would be a lot grander.

“I made it out of a section of drain rod and a Gok Wan bubble bath lid covered in gold paper.”

The fete was organised in aid of the school and the church, with villagers raising more than £2,000.

The school is currently trying to raise enough cash to buy a new minibus.
