CHILDREN gathered to teach each other about their native culture and language.
The 10th annual Teach a Friend a Language Day was held at Woodbridge High School in St Barnabas Road, Woodford Green, last week.
More than 100 children from 12 schools, many in national costume, took part in the day with the school hall echoing to the sound of 27 different languages.
The inter-school competition celebrates the diverse cultural heritage of its pupils by pairing up a native speaker with a friend to teach them their language and share some of their customs.
The children performed in front of judges and prepared a table display using interesting things from the community they represent.
Thomas Ball, who teaches at Trinity Catholic High School in Mornington Road, Woodford Green, attended the event with his pupils.
He said: “The children were all using superlatives like 'fantastic' and 'great fun' to describe the event.
“I also felt that the day showed how optimistic and enthusiastic the younger generation are about the diversity that exists in our community.
“It really should give us all hope for the future.”
