POP star Ed Sheeran made a surprise appearance at the council's 'Urban Classic' concert in the grounds of Waltham Forest Town Hall last night.

The show, part of the authority's 'Big 6' events to celebrate the Olympics, was attended by an estimated 9,000 people and included performances by acts including Ms Dynamite and Fazer.

Council leader Cllr Chris Robbins said the event was a "good indication" of the reception the Olympic Torch relay would get when it arrives at the town hall for another concert on Saturday July 21.

He added: "The event was absolutely stunning and local people of every conceivable age and background were in attendance singing, dancing and smiling from ear to ear."

The council insists the Big 6 events held so far have been a big success.

But some residents have criticised its total potential cost of £1.5million and the lack of any events in Chingford.

The authority hopes to pay for the series of events, which have also included a winter wonderland and fireworks, by renting land for temporary campsites during the Olympics.
