TENANTS of a tower being used as a missile pad for the duration of the Olympics were questioned by police as they entered their homes, it is claimed.

Residents of Fred Wigg Tower in Montague Road, Leytonstone, were stopped at the entrance to the block by officers and asked why they were entering the building on Friday, July 13, according to the tenants' solicitors Howe & Co.

A group of tenants last week lost a High Court bid to prevent the missiles being placed on top of their homes.

And despite a claim by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) that there would be no security outside the building, solicitor Kieran O'Rourke said tenants were asked to prove their identity.

He added: "If there's security it should be making the residents feel safe, not asking 'Who are you, why are you here?'

"The tenants said it was to do with press, not to protect the soldiers."

A police spokesman said there was no record of any such questioning on Friday.

A spokeswoman added: "I don't think we have any permanent arrangement to provide security for the building."

The MoD insist the surface-to-air weapons are necessary to protect the Olympic games from attack, but residents fear their homes could become a terrorist target.
