MOTORISTS have slammed ‘overzealous’ parking wardens after it was revealed that 65 percent of appeals made against tickets issued in Redbridge over the last year were successful.

Figures released by London Councils earlier this week show that no other borough saw a higher percentage of tickets overturned on appeal to independent adjudicators.

Adrian Birch, 33, was hit with two tickets in one weekend outside his home in Croft Lodge Close, Woodford Green, in January.

He was one of dozens of people ticketed for parking with two wheels on the pavement in a borough-wide clampdown.

He said: “I appealed to the adjudicator and they said Redbridge council did not provide details of their case and that they had no option but to let me off.

“I’m not surprised to see so many people winning their appeals. They issue tickets willy-nilly in this borough.”

The number of people in Redbridge appealing to independent adjudicators the Parking and Traffic Appeals Service (PATAS) has gone up for the fourth successive year with 1,758 cases heard.

Sasha Titelbaum, 40, is appealing against a ticket he received on High Road, Woodford Green, after leaving his car to remove a barrier left in front of a legal parking space by workmen.

He said: “I have been given other tickets that I know were wrong, but I didn’t appeal because I was worried about having to pay double if I lost.

“I think that puts a lot of people off, but with this latest ticket I know 100 percent I am in the right."

He was backed by 91-year-old motorist Harry Royds of Sunset Avenue, Woodford Green, who won his appeal against a £100 penalty incorrectly issued to him in 2008.

He said:  “I have a blue badge now, so I’m alright, but with these new cars they have they seem intent on catching as many motorists out as they can.

“The fact that so many people win their appeals tells me that the council are being overzealous and just trying to make as much money as they can by issuing as many tickets as possible.”

Redbridge Council has been asked to comment.
