A CONTROVERSIAL march by the far-right English Defence League (EDL) will take place later today.

Members of the extremist group – which describes itself as a movement against Islamic extremism – are set to protest in Walthamstow from 1.30pm.

The march is scheduled to begin near Blackhorse Road Tube station and progress along Forest Road to the Magistrates Court, where a rally will take place.

The plans have attracted widespread opposition from residents, and campaigners from We Are Waltham Forest are expecting large numbers to turn out for an alternative event.

The Waltham Forest Socialist Party is also encouraging supporters to take place in the anti-racism demonstration, which will take place at 11am on the Arcade Site on the corner of Hoe Street and Walthamstow High Street.

Walthamstow Socialist Party branch secretary Bob Severn said: “The rise of Golden Dawn in Greece shows how racist organisations can grow at a time of austerity.

"The fight against racism is therefore linked to uniting working-class people against the cuts and for jobs, homes and services.”

Police have reassured residents they have received no intelligence to suggest the protest will lead to public disorder or violence.
