A martial arts academy run by a former policeman is offering a course for children which aims to prevent bullying by promoting self-confidence and conflict resolution.

Eddie Kone, 40, from Chingford, has launched the Little Grapplers at his Jui Jistsu association based in Uplands Business Park, off Blackhorse Lane in Walthamstow.

He insists it is not about teaching children to fight, but to resolve situations peacefully and defend themselves if necessary.

Mr Kone said: "The programme is about teaching children about respect and the life skills to be confident and defend themselves from bullies.

"We do not teach them to throw punches and kicks. In fact it is the totally opposite. We aim to empower kids through conflict resolution techniques, drug awareness, balance and co-ordination," says Mr Kone.

After serving 16 years in the Metropolitan Police, Mr Kone left the force three years ago after growing disillusioned with the job.

Reluctant to provide details due to the sensitivity of his job, he said: "The longer I was there, the more I grew to dislike it.

“I saw stuff that was inappropriate and felt their overall objective to help people was not being achieved."

Classes for children at Eddie Kone Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy are held every day and clients are trained by a team of five qualified Jui Jitsu instructors.

The technique used by the association is called Gracie and dates back 100 years.

It was developed by the founders of UFC and is considered by Mr Kone to be the most effective form of self-defence.

Mr Kone and his wife Harriet have two young daughters, aged 5 and 3, who are both enrolled in the programme.

And he believes addressing issues early can prevent problems escalating.

He said: "We are here to try and stop children from committing suicide. Bullying can lead to self-harm and becoming a recluse.

"Kids cannot escape bullying and it has got worse because of social networking sites. My only objective is to save one of these kids.”

Mr Kone advises parents to attend the sessions so they can see what the children are being taught.

The EKBJJ is offering two free classes, whereby it is £25 a month afterwards for unlimited classes.
