Plans to further cut parking in a road would force local businesses to close, it is claimed.

In early 2013, Redbridge council introduced yellow lines to ban parking from 8.30am until 6.30pm Monday to Saturday in Hermon Hill, which stretches from Wanstead to South Woodford.

This was designed to stop commuters parking on the road, though there was a small stretch of grass verges left free of restrictions.

Now Redbridge council has announced plans to include the grass verges in the ban, which stretches from 90 to 124 Hermon Hill, and put in bollards.

James Palmer, who owns Dipsticks Tyres and Exhausts Garage, said that if the plan went ahead he would have nowhere to put the cars which come in for an MOT.

He uses the grass verges, earmarked for the ban, to leave these cars.

He said: “We have eight to ten MOTs a day, people drop off their cars coming from as far as Loughton and Chigwell and pick them up later in the day, so we need somewhere to put them.

“This plan would completely ruin us to be honest and I will be making my objection clear, we pay £10,000 a year business rates so the council needs to listen to us.

“This garage has been here for over 50 years and  if this goes through then we could be forced to close.”

Desmond Smyth, who owns Woodford Flooring Limited, said his business was already suffering from a lack of parking in the road.

He said: “Parking has been a real issue here, which means people just don’t visit, some days go by with no customers visiting at all.

“We are getting squeezed and I fear this is the last straw, I pay £2,000 a year in business rates and we get treated like this in return.”

A petition, which has been launched against the proposals, can be viewed here.

People have until March 26 to air their views.

Redbridge council has been contacted for its response to concerns.
