FOLLOWING the series of explosions in central London this morning, Tube stations in Wanstead and Woodford have been closed until further notice.

Hundreds of commuters from the borough were left stranded both in central London and in Wanstead and Woodford after the explosions brought the city to a standstill.

Large numbers of casualties are being reported after at least five explosions on the transport network, including buses and Tube trains.

The British Transport Police said incidents took place at Aldgate, Edgware Road, King's Cross, Old Street and Russell Square stations.

Reports are coming in of around 20 deaths and dozens of inijuries. The cause of the explosions is not yet known.

All Tube and bus services in central London have been suspended.

Locally, signs have gone up at all Tube stations, with a board at Wanstead station saying the network had been suspended due to a power supply problem.

However, this has been largely dismissed on national television reports.

Whipps Cross Hospital, Leytonstone, has been put on major incident alert, while Redbridge Council is also on alert and is preparing to supply extra manpower and support if needed.

Prime Minister Tony Blair was due to address the nation at noon.
