Nearly 250 people donned their wellington boots and braved some very muddy conditions in one of the biggest charity events of the month.

Walking beside them were 80 dogs brought along to take part in the Winter Walkies, organised in support of St Clare Hospice in Hastingwood.

The sponsored walk through the fields around the hospice’s base in Hastingwood Road raised £7,000 for the charity - enough to pay for two patients to be cared for in the inpatient unit for one week.

Fundraiser Grace Clutton said: “It was lovely to see so many people and their dogs turn out on a cold but beautiful Sunday morning to support the hospice, and we’re so pleased to have raised more than last year.

“Everyone wrapped up warm, including the dogs, many of which were wearing some very natty jackets.

“Thanks also go to our volunteers for having the hot drinks and snacks ready on our return.”
