People living in a street where a man's body was found this afternoon have spoken of their shock.

The body was found by a woman in an alleyway off Mason Way, Waltham Abbey, at around 1pm today folowing what is thought to be a suspected attempted burglary.

According to local reports the man, who has not yet been formally identified, is believed to have died after a fence panel collapsed on to him as he was leaving the property.

Cissie Munday, 89, who lives in the road, said: "I'm just shocked. It's usually so quiet around here and it's really a nice area."

"It's nerve-racking if you're on your own and they've found someone dead."

Another resident living close to the scene who did not want to be named said: "It's tragic. I feel sorry for his mum and his family."

The body has not been formally identified so no next of kin have been informed.
