Roy Williams gives interview and performance at Loughton Methodist Church for Jazz Archive's summer event

INTERNATIONALLY renowned trombonist Roy Williams was this year's celebrity guest at the National Jazz Archive’s Summer Jazz event.

An audience at Loughton Methodist Church, was treated to an hour long interview with Mr Williams conducted by Digby Fairweather, the founder of the Jazz Archive.

The trombonist spoke about his long career, which stretches back 50 years and includes stints playing with jazz legends including Sidney Bechet, Bud Freeman, and Humphrey Lyttelton.

He also spoke about his many festival appearances and donated a program from the 1968 Newport Jazz Festival to the Archive, which is based in Loughton Library.

After the interview Mr Williams performed a 90 minute set with a full backing band.

Jazz archivist David Nathan said: “The hour long interview with Digby Fairweather was a delight and flew by like a conversation between two old friends which indeed they are.

“The audience gave a rousing reception to both the interview and the live music.“
