Westall Road playground on Debden estate damaged before even opening

VANDALS have repeatedly targeted a children's playground before it has even opened and completely destroyed some equipment.

The fence around the new Westall Road playground, in Loughton, has been pulled down on a daily basis by yobs, and the tunnel feature inside burned to the ground after multiple arson attacks.

Jodie Erics, 32, of Colebrook Lane, Loughton, had been looking forward to taking her 21-month-old son Raffie on the new equipment and said she was devastated by the damage to the area.

“I have watched local children pull the scaffolding down and climb into the park every evening to have a play on the equipment, and was waiting for the day they vandalised something," she said.

“Well it has come, the lovely new tunnel feature, the only feature in the park my baby can use, has been set alight and totally burnt out.

“I even watched one day in broad daylight as a mum held back the scaffolding so that her ten-year-old daughter could have a go on the climbing frame. What is Debden coming to?

“ I guess those kids and parents would rather have houses built on that site because that's what will happen if the park is not looked after.”

Loughton Town Council had promised to deliver the new playground this month and said most of the work had been completed by October 30.

But the deadline could now be pushed back as council officers attend the site on a daily basis to repair vandalism.

Services manager Paul Hoy said: “On the morning of November 2 I attended the site to re-erect the temporary fencing and I discovered the tunnel had been set on fire at some point over the previous weekend. The tunnel was damaged beyond repair .

“The tunnel was subject to an even greater arson attack over the weekend of November 7 and 8 resulting in the complete destruction of the fabric of the tunnel, the caving in of the roof of the mound and a huge area of scorched turf at the mouth of the tunnel.

“All negotiation between the town council and the contractor has been resolved and it is anticipated that the tunnel will be reinstated within the next two weeks.”

It's a real shame. It is wasting money and destroying something our children would enjoy. But sadly it is not surprising. Many people round here - both adults and children - simply don't care. There is dog poo all over the pavements, people carve up the verges and green spaces by parking their cars there, at weekends when the playgrounds are not vandalised they are full of broken glass. Yet, these same people are the first to moan and they are the kind of people who blame minorities for everything that goes wrong and then vote BNP. It's pathetic. If you see people vandalising things or causing a nuisance, then phone the police, don't moan to the newspaper.

As the local residents vote BNP, why don't they get their local councillors to go out and raise the money to pay for the repairs?

The problem is that whenever BNP councillors talk about crime like vandalism, they blame it on 'outsiders' such as black students travelling in from other areas. The fact is that most crime like this is committed by people in the town who are 99% white. Local people are either in a state of denial about this kind of problem or they blame non-existent black people. It's not a race issue; white and black people can be equally bad and it happens in every town and borough. Most people in Debden hate the vandalism and rowdy types who bring down the area. But the root cause of this problem is the refusal to accept that people in the community are responsible for this kind of crime and the failure of residents to simply phone the police when they see adults and children pull scaffolding down or destroy play equipment. The BNP just represent this state of denial: blame someone else, it's not my problem. When people take responsibility, we won't need fund-raising to repair play equipment because it won't be destroyed in the first place.

Community Police were informed first and formost, they had already had several calls and are organising mobile camera units, i also contacted both of our local councilors (LRA & BNP), who were both concerned about the vandalism. The aim of the article is to shame the culprits, not just to have a moan.

Surely it is for Debden's parents to make sure their children are behaving themselves, rather than relying on the police to control them.
