EPPING FOREST: Fire service must make £7.6m savings

MILLIONS of pounds of cuts will have to be made to the fire service in Essex, it has been announced.

Essex Fire and Rescue Service is facing the prospect of making £7.6m worth of savings, after the Government announced in today's Spending Review that it would slash grants to fire and rescue authorities by 25 per cent after two years.

Chief fire officer David Johnson said the cuts would mean “significant change for the service.”

It is not yet known exactly how the money will be saved, but the Government has recommended spending less on wages, a recruitment freeze and sharing senior staff as some of the ways money can be saved.

The service conducted a survey in preparation for the review, which showed that most people did not want to see stations closed, although half supported having fewer fire engines at some stations and changing shift patterns to save money.

Mr Johnson said fire bosses would now consider their options.

things have move on so much in recent years, but not the police or fire service. Times have changed, and so they must also.

Why? is it that front line services are the first thing to be hit when it comes to making savings, it never seems to affect our overseas aid donations. What happened to the saying Charity begins at Home? its about time this country started to look after its own first.

You're a Tory councillor, why don't you explain your party's spending policies to us?! Anyway, even if DFID funding was cancelled - a move that would significantly weaken the UK's international standing and therefore its diplomatic leverage - it would not make a big difference to the nation's finances. It's one of the smallest departments.

Yes you are correct I am a TORY and proud of it, our spending policy is non existant as Labour have left us with nothing. I take it from your tone that you are one of the left wing people responsible for the mess we are in, its funny how you left wing do gooders always try to twist the blame around. after 13 years of trying to get it right you ought to be in a better position to realise why these cuts are happening

Aha, an ad hominem attack from a politician. Typical. No, I am not left-wing and unlike you I have not held any elected office or worked for the government. You raised a complaint about government policy and I pointed out that, as a member of the Tory party, you are a supporter of the government and should perhaps explain its policies to us! You want front-line services protected by cutting or eliminating international development expenditure, but it's your government that is slashing them.

Yes there are cuts ahead, but you have to ask yourself why? if Labour have done such a great job with the economy over the last 13years. the fact is they left this country on its knees, and unfortunatley we are now having to put things right yet again. When will people of this country learn what Labour are about, its always the same giving money to the scroungers, encouraging immigration, supporting overseas aid causes, any thing to get the support of every single ethnic minority so as to stay in power, then blame every tory when we have to put things right. Look back in history its always the same. If we didnt have so many lame ducks & scroungers to look after we would be far better off.

I think you are in the wrong party, Adam. Why not join the BNP? They blame everything on immigrants and foreigners as well.

I wish we had a few more people like me in politics, we have far too many like you, which is why we are where we are. keep the red flag flying quick exit.

Given that you openly disagree with your own party's policies on spending, perhaps you should also direct that silly comment to the Conservative Party. They are the ones who are cutting grants to the fire service and ring-fencing the international development budget, not me. As for the "scrounging lame duck" ethnic minorities, they didn't get the UK in this financial crisis and not even the Conservatives are saying that they are, or that a policy of "send 'em back" is a cure. Only the fringe BNP share your sentiments. Go join them and fly a swastika.

I am totally shocked that Cllr Adam Clark has the views he has just expressed. Surely someone with such views should not be in politics. Have you heard of the 'Big Society' you are a Tory after all and the Tory party are supporting it. Your attitude disgusts me and I think maybe you are forgetting that there are a lot of people who come over here and are fleeing horrendous situations, and least we not forget the immigrants of the past who have helped to build the infrastructure of this country and done /still do jobs that some 'English' people will not do because they think they are above them so instead rely on benefits.
My Grandparents came over from Ireland as immigrants and worked for well over 40 years here, my parents have worked since there were 18 and me and my brother have worked since we were 18 all paying money into the tax system, so should we all go back to Ireland now it is a safer place to be, because if that is your view maybe the Tory’s would like to reimburse me and my family for all the money it has paid into the system.

On the issue of fireman, they are greedy. Maybe the first cut should be stop paying them to sleep whilst on duty, second options stop paying them to go and fit fire alarms in peoples homes and stop paying them for giving talks in schools, yes this does happen and when I found out from a friend works in the fire service and who can some months earn up to an extra £800 approx as it is counted as overtime could not believe what I was hearing, a lot of people are under the impression that this is a free service, it may appear like that from the outside but internally it is costing the tax payer. They are all wining about the cuts and jobs and then decide to strike on the busiest night of the year and they wonder why the public are not behind them.
