A community group that puts on roller skating events and lessons has won a competition in recognition of its work.

The Leytonstone-based Let’s Roll Community Interest Company scooped top prize in the Waltham Forest category at the East Thames and BiTC (Business in the Community) Social Enterprise competition 2013.

It had to compete against two other social enterprises in the borough in a Dragon's Den-style presentation event in order to win prizes including office space, access to a £5,000 loan, its own business mentor and membership to the Social Enterprise UK organisation.

The group was formed out of residents association Friends of Langthorne Park in Leytonstone when it held its first three-day roller skating festival in the park back in the summer of 2011.

Organiser and founder Amanda Henry said: “Having pioneered the successful E11 roller discos over the past two years, Let’s Roll has be created to tackle short term and long term goals in the community.

"It's an innovative, energetic and viable Social Enterprise and myself and the team are delighted about winning this competition, which will allow the great work to continue and give the community an alternative sport to participate in".

Let's Roll will be teaching roller skating for members of the community throughout May at the Leyton Youth Centre between 12pm and 4pm, as well as holding a roller disco every Saturday from 4pm to 8pm. Lessons are £5 per session and the disco costs £4 per person.
