The Queen’s representative in Essex was the guest speaker at the May meeting of the Probus Club of Epping.

Michael Chapman came dressed in the ceremonial uniform of a deputy lieutenant for the talk at the Lindsey Street community association headquarters in Frampton Road.

He explained that the lieutenancy dates from the reign of Henry VIII and is responsible for raising a militia on behalf of the monarch.

Among the highlights of his term in office have been helping the Countess of Wessex present medals to members of the Women’s Land Army who had served in the Second World War, and helping plant commemorative oaks on The Green  in Theydon Bois.

He also recalled how, as chairman of the district’s health authority, he had helped welcome Princess Diana to Epping when she unveiled a plaque in Spencer Close.

The next meeting will be the ladies’ luncheon on June 19 with a presentation by the Mayfield Farm Bakery.
