Whatever Council Chief Executive Martin Esom’s recent big pay rise (‘Council chief gets pay rise for cuts’, September 18) is for, it certainly is not for answering his mail.

The council’s Residents First Charter states that email inquiries will be fully responded to in five working days, and complaints dealt with in 20 working days.

I emailed some questions to Mr Esom on June 30 and August 5 and made a formal complaint to him on July 23. In each case, the issues that I raised were both serious and evidenced.

Yet Mr Esom has not deigned to respond. Moreover, a complaint I made on June 30 to Mr Fenwick, the ‘Director of Governance’, which was also about a serious matter, also remains unanswered.

As a mere member of the public, I wonder why have a Residents First Charter at all, when even the council’s most senior officers so flagrantly disregard it.
